About

Scottsdale Museum of Art collaborated with the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture (ANFA) to expand its existing Aspiring Architects program by introducing new workshops that exposed local teens to the neuroaesthetic themes highlighted in Albert Bloch’s Duell (Duel). The collaboration brought in regional and global experts, giving students access to a greater depth of knowledge from individuals actively engaged in field research. During the workshops, participants discussed Bloch’s painting, analyzed their emotional responses to visual stimuli, and created artworks that reflected their new understanding of neuroaesthetic principles. The workshops culminated in an informal exhibition of student-created artworks, allowing instructors and organizers to observe how well participants integrated neuroaesthetic principles into their final projects.

Intended Outcome

The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art planned to engage 30 teens in collaborative workshops, with the goal of sparking student interest in discussing emotions in art and architecture.

Actual Outcome

The workshops engaged 40 teens, with surveys indicating they successfully fostered interest in art, architecture, and neuroscience.

Advice Post Project

Scottsdale found that the most effective way to reach its target audience was by directly partnering with school career counselors. Through this personal connection, counselors were able to identify and recruit students who already had a strong interest in architecture and neuroscience. Consider partnering with local schools to attract enthusiastic audiences.
