Art Bridges Traveling Exhibitions

A way to bring world-class art out of storage and into your institution

About

Art Bridges supports traveling exhibitions by partnering with institutions that have already organized, or are in the process of organizing great exhibitions but cannot tour them without additional financial, logistical, and strategic support.

We support borrowing institutions by covering part of the costs associated with the exhibitions as well as providing Learning & Engagement funding to create related programming.

Goals

  • Get art out of storage and into communities
  • Support collaboration among partnering institutions
  • Inspire the creation of new engagement opportunities and attract new audiences

How It Works

We encourage organizers to submit an exhibition proposal. While we prefer exhibitions drawn from singular collections, loans are acceptable as long as they can be approved for a minimum of two years.

For Exhibition Organizers:

  • The organizer receives a flat fee, ranging from $30,000 to $75,000, for the two-year loan period.
  • No participation fee can be charged by the organizer.
  • The organizer collaborates with Art Bridges to develop the exhibition and any tour materials.
  • Art Bridges manages the tour.
  • The checklist can consist of works from the permanent collection and/or works on loan if all works are available for two years.
  • Art Bridges issues and manages loan agreements for the tour, working directly with object lenders.
  • Art Bridges covers direct tour costs, historically billed as shared costs.
    • Crating, shipping, minimal conservation, insurance, mounts, A/V equipment, storage, rights and reproduction fees for tour-approved images, courier, framing, and object preparation

Qualifying Criteria

  1. The exhibition is based on art of the American experience and is inclusive of artists who have a geographic and/or thematic connection to the U.S. and its territories.
  2. The exhibition content or curatorial perspective advances the dialogue of American art.
  3. The exhibition advances the mission and vision of Art Bridges.
  4. The exhibition would not be able to tour without Art Bridges’ support due to limited staff capacity or the lack of a traveling exhibitions department.
  5. The exhibition presents opportunities for strong and impactful Learning & Engagement projects at partner sites.

Materials needed for review by Art Bridges

  • Project proposal, listing content, themes, the curatorial vision, and goals
  • A checklist, which can be working, identifying any loan or ownership
    • If loans are included in the checklist, the lenders must be willing to participate in the tour.
  • Tour duration and availability for when the works can start touring
  • Budget, detailing the total expenses expected to tour the project (Our team and the organizer will work collaboratively on this.)

Additional materials, if on hand at the time of proposal submission

  • Didactics
  • Learning & Engagement materials that will travel

For Borrowing Institutions:

Art Bridges also provides support to borrowing institutions that begins with an introductory call to discuss the application process and timeline. Art Bridges covers a portion of shared and local costs associated with the exhibition, manages the tour, and provides tour package content. Borrowing institutions are not charged a participation fee and are eligible to apply for Learning & Engagement funding to develop programming related to the presentation of the exhibition.
