About

This hands-on workshop—led by acclaimed artist vanessa german in connection to her work "Black Girl on Skateboard Going Where She’s Got to Go to Do What She’s Got to Do and It Might Not Have Anything to Do With You, Ever"—invited participants to explore artmaking through assemblage, mixed media, and sculpture using found materials. Inspired by german’s narrative-driven and tactile practice, attendees created their own expressive figures using discarded community materialsthat were modeled after her iconic power figures. The program emphasized creativity as a tool for social healing, drawing from german’s multidisciplinary approach that merges spirituality, activism, and Black feminist traditions. Participants gained insight into the artist’s unique process, while engaging in a powerful form of visual storytelling and personal expression.

Intended Outcome

The El Paso Museum of Art hoped to reach 600 visitors with this workshop series, which also included 3D painting and music events, and to educate the greater community about Black artists.

Actual Outcome

The El Paso Museum of Art reached 227 visitors with this workshop series and provided audiences with access to a world-renowned artist at no cost.

Advice Post Project

When partnering with an artist for a museum program, connect the artist’s practice to what resonates with your community and your museum’s values, as the El Paso Museum of Art did with vanessa german’s socially engaged, narrative-driven work. Design hands-on, participatory experiences that reflect the artist’s methods, using accessible materials like found objects to promote inclusivity and sustainability. Frame the program around meaningful themes, such as healing, identity, or activism, and create opportunities for storytelling and reflection. Be sure to consider ways to extend the impact through follow-up community engagement or public presentations.
