About

CSUN Art Galleries hosted a free, five-session Día de los Muertos printmaking workshop led by the "Before You Now" artists known as Kalli Arte Collective. The workshop was held in a newly dedicated artmaking space within the galleries. Participants created remembrance portraits of loved ones that they contributed to a community altar displayed in the galleries. The program marked the first formal Día de los Muertos event hosted by CSUN Art Galleries and involved collaboration with the university staff and student organizations.

Intended Outcome

CSUN Art Galleries aimed to reach at least 30 participants to solidify relationships among local communities that feed into the university's student and faculty populations. It also hoped to increase student, faculty, and visitor access to exhibition artists.

Actual Outcome

The gallery was able to develop deeper relationships with both Art & Design and Chicana/o Studies programs and faculty, as well as the student-led organization MEChA de CSUN. It also created new relationships with another campus-based Chicano/a/x organization, Colita de Rana, and four local community college faculty and administrators. Nearly three-quarters of CSUN’s programming was led by "Before You Now" exhibition artists. Many of the 416 attendees expressed that they appreciated being able to directly hear from and work with artists whose work was presented in the exhibition.

Advice Post Project

When planning ambitious new programming, especially if it goes beyond your usual scope, anticipate strain on staff and resources by developing a clear, overarching timeline for all projects. Like CSUN, invest in training students or part-time staff to take on expanded roles in program management.
