About

In collaboration with artist Pam Murphy, the New Britain Museum of American Art (NBMAA) brought the AmericanImpressionism: Blue Grass, Green Skies exhibit to patients in a local hospital via workshops that connected the exhibition to artmaking activities and yoga practices. The program allowed patients to access the exhibit in a way that would not have been possible otherwise, and allowed them to create and experiment with artmaking while learning about personal healing practices. Each practice was individualized for each patient, connecting the art to what was taught in the workshops.

Intended Outcome

The NBMAA intended to provide access to 40 patients who are not often reached by the museum, while fostering partnership and collaboration with the local hospital.

Actual Outcome

The program was a success, engaging 46 patients through highly personalized instruction. A few patients expressed that they enjoyed the opportunity to create while in the hospital. Collaboration with the hospital was also successful, and future partnerships are anticipated.

Advice Post Project

Though it was difficult to create a curriculum that met the diverse needs of the patients, hiring a consultant with knowledge in wellness-based art proved most beneficial. Consider hiring a consultant alongside the teacher to cater lesson plans to different special needs.
