About

Guest artist Lyrikal Jenkins was contracted to co-create school and public programming related to the "American Perspectives" exhibition. Jenkins worked on-site at the museum to prepare lesson plans, identify supplies, and assemble materials for outreach classes held in Memphis Shelby County schools twice per week.

Intended Outcome

To offer the Memphis community a rare opportunity to meet and make work alongside a living artist

Actual Outcome

The guest artist program was the first of its kind at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, and it was a great learning experience for the museum. Visitors and students alike connected with folk art as well as a living artist like the museum envisioned. Following this pilot phase, the museum plans to shift the program so that it isled by a guest teaching artist, which would expand its impact for students.

Advice Post Project

The Dixon Gallery and Gardens believes it is imperative to offer this opportunity to guest artists who have educational experience or are seasoned in their careers to help lift the burden off the museum’s already overworked education teams.
