About

For the first time, the Boise Art Museum transformed its galleries into a period-appropriate environment inspired by “Women in American Impressionism.” The use of visual and auditory elements—including period furniture, textiles, lighting, and both live and recorded music—created an immersive experience for visitors during the exhibition. The gallery space was also utilized for two evening events, featuring salon conversations that explored music, literature, and women both historically and in contemporary society. For this new endeavor, the museum worked in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Idaho, Women in Academic Leadership, and the American Association of University Women.

Intended Outcome

The Boise Art Museum wanted to provide 55,000 visitors with an entirely new visual arts experience, encouraging further engagement.

Actual Outcome

Over 20,000 visitors experienced the immersive space while visiting the gallery or attending the salon conversations. Based on attendance and the quality of participation, the museum achieved its goal.

Advice Post Project

Consider transforming your gallery into a period-appropriate environment to help visitors better understand the historical context of the artwork and to encourage more meaningful discussion. Immersive elements, such as set design and projected media, can create impactful experiences, especially for first-time visitors. This approach can help museums stage exhibitions more effectively by prioritizing the atmosphere and context alongside the artwork.
