About

The UMFA engaged new audiences of adults aged 55+ through an eight-session multidisciplinary artmaking series that was centered around connecting to art via an environmental and outdoor lens. The program focused on the "American Impressionism (Blue Grass, Green Skies)" exhibition, using the representations of varied geography as teaching moments throughout the plein air painting, creative writing, and local outdoor tour activities. The UMFA worked with local groups and senior-focused organizations to create this program as a means to slow down in the fast-paced world and immerse its audience in the healing power of nature. The program was a catalyst for community building and reflection upon the environmental themes of the exhibition.

Intended Outcome

The UMFA expected 15 participants with the intention of deepening relationships and partnerships among community collaborators while accessing new audiences.

Actual Outcome

Due to such an intimate program, the UMFA engaged 12 individuals, but the small class size resulted in stronger relationships being built among these program participants, allowing for more teaching and community building.

Advice Post Project

Diversifying marketing strategies can reach new participants in a desired demographic. The UMFA found that the program was successful in creating depth among the adults in attendance, though its reach to new participants was limited.
