About

In a first-time collaboration with the university’s Hendricks Chapel and its long-running Malmgren Concert Series, the Syracuse University Art Museum brought the Duke Ellington Orchestra and its own university choir together to help visitors broaden their understanding of Gordon Parks as an interdisciplinary artist and to connect the music, art, and culture of his lifetime to that of the present day. In the concert, the orchestra and choir made direct connections to the exhibition "Gordon Parks: Homeward to the Prairie I Come."

Intended Outcome

The Syracuse University Art Museum aimed to reach 300 visitors with this program and increase community engagement in spaces outside of the museum building.

Actual Outcome

Through this on-campus partnership, the Syracuse University Art Museum was able to tap into existing and brand-new audiences, engaging 600 visitors. It was the best-attended program in the museum's history.

Advice Post Project

For university museums, cross-campus collaborations can enhance reach. By incorporating interdisciplinary elements like music performances by notable artists, they can reach audiences in new ways and help people make personal connections.
