The Farnsworth Art Museum

During the week of Louise Nevelson’s birthday, the Farnsworth Art Museum held a celebration in her honor. Inspired by Nevelson’s work and her familial ties to the lumber trade, the event featured a community sculpture-building project using found objects, turned wood, light, and shadow. The celebration also included informal remarks in the exhibition galleries, a printed take-home brochure, and an in-gallery activity with journals, pencils, and commemorative cards, allowing participants to sketch in the galleries one final time before the exhibition closed. The museum ensured a lasting presence from the day through videos and evergreen materials.
The Farnsworth Art Museum aimed to reach 250 visitors with this activity and to celebrate Louise Nevelson’s prominence as one of the most pioneering sculptors of the twentieth century.
The Farnsworth Art Museum reached 135 visitors with this activity and, as the originating museum for the exhibition, was able to connect with approximately 42,000 visitors and build partnerships with local schools and community organizations.
Consider designing interactive, community-centered events that draw on an artist’s personal history and artistic themes. Incorporating hands-on activities, opportunities for reflection, lasting materials, and connections to the community and its context can extend the impact beyond the day of the celebration.
