Candy Portraits
at Galleries of Contemporary Art

Galleries of Contemporary Art at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (GOCA) facilitated a portrait workshop for children and families. Inspired by Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ “Untitled” (L.A.), participants used cookies and candies to create a portrait of a loved one.

About

Galleries of Contemporary Art’s candy portrait sessions provided an introduction to installation art with a discussion about “Untitled” (L.A.) by Felix Gonzalez-Torres that focused on themes like knowing who our loved ones are; what colors, designs, images, and patterns remind us of them; and how we like to honor them. Afterward, a mosaic artist guided participants in the use of candy to create portraits of their loved ones.

Intended Outcome

Galleries of Contemporary Art hoped to expand its audience by increasing programming specifically for youth and families. GOCA anticipated seeing 50 participants for the candy portrait sessions.

Actual Outcome

The candy portrait sessions attracted 53 participants, who were mostly college students. The sessions did not attract as many families and youth as GOCA had hoped, but all sessions were completely full.

Advice Post Project

Programs, such as these candy portrait sessions, prove especially effective in attracting families and celebrating diverse identities. Prioritize family-friendly and identity-affirming experiences to broaden your audience and foster a welcoming environment.
