About

"Ginny Ruffner: Reforestation of the Imagination" provided a new, never-before-experienced opportunity for immersion in augmented reality and virtual reality. Until this exhibition, the fusion of traditional art with technology had not yet been explored in Stark County, where the Canton Museum of Art is located. The museum organized an Art & Tech Fusion Family Day, where visitors were invited to engage in technology-infused activities, performances, traditional artmaking, and augmented reality artmaking. To further integrate tech, the museum also offered Virtual Reality Nights, where visitors used VR headsets to create digital paintings, drawings, and sculptures. These masterpieces were then displayed on a screen in the museum lobby.

Intended Outcome

With these tech and virtual reality pilot programs, the Canton Museum of Art aimed to increase engagement with younger visitors, families, and adults. The museum hoped to welcome 2,000 participants.

Actual Outcome

The Canton Museum of Art successfully engaged 592 visitors of all ages through its Art & Tech Fusion Family Day and Virtual Reality Nights. The museum found that these programs were overwhelmingly attended by its target audiences of families, adults, and younger visitors.

Advice Post-Project

Do not be discouraged if the public’s interaction with a new, in-gallery activity or technology-based program is lower than anticipated. The Canton Museum of Art found there was some reluctance or discomfort from participants in trying new tech, but that younger visitors and children were excited and more willing to experiment. This pilot program introduced museum visitors to something new, building confidence and making future iterations easier.
