About

The Mint Museum’s “Amazing Grace: Stories of African American Courage, Strength, and Resilience” community celebration featured gallery tours, curator talks, music, spoken word, hands-on artmaking, and a response exhibition inspired by Eldzier Cortor’s "Southern Souvenir No. II." Rooted in the museum’s tradition of using art to spark dialogue around difficult topics, the program specifically addressed the impact of violence against Black women and included contributions from local artists, therapists, and community voices. Therapists presented on recognizing, healing, and dealing with trauma, abuse, and human trafficking. Six resident artists created new works in response to the exhibition, led activities, and engaged visitors, while musical performances, personal testimonials, and supportive resources aimed to foster healing, reflection, and community connection in a respectful and accessible environment.

Intended Outcome

The museum hoped to bring in 2,000 community members to personally connect with the experiences of Black residents in the South.

Actual Outcome

“Amazing Grace” increased visitors' engagement in difficult conversations at The Mint Museum, making history and culture both personal and impactful. Sixhundred and fifty-eight (658) people directly engaged with speakers and artists and even shared their own stories. Responding to a request for feedback on the program, one visitor stated, “The art today taught me depths of history I’d never seen before. The deep hurt and pain reclaimed into power and resilience is inexplainable by word the way visual art can.”

Advice Post Project

Clearly communicate the intent of and audience for special programs, especially when they differ from your usual offerings. For example, The Mint Museum staff emphasized that this event was a reflective, inclusive community day that would deal with mature topics and not a typical family-focused event. Lastly, if accessibility services like sign language interpretation are planned, ensure you have the necessary materials, such as scripts or speaker notes, well in advance to avoid last-minute cancellations.
