Faith Ringgold
Subway Graffiti #2
In creating her iconic “story quilts,” Faith Ringgold drew upon autobiographical experiences and Black history to craft intricate and important narratives. Subway Graffiti #2 depicts a snapshot of Ringgold’s beloved Harlem. She populates the work with Black community members and familiar names. The moniker “Madame Posey,” for instance, floats above the crowd as a nod toward Ringgold’s mother and the legacy of quilt-making in her family.
