I Will Follow You My Dear

I Will Follow You My Dear by multimedia artist Stephen Towns depicts a romantic moment between two lovers in the historical Paradise Park. The segregated tourist destination in Florida was frequented by Black Americans during the Jim Crow era, when the law enforced “separated, but equal” spaces. Despite the systemic oppression at large, Paradise Park was a space of joy and leisure for Black and African American communities. The title of this quilted piece is based on Nancy Wilson’s 1964 musical cover of “I Want to Be With You.”
