While “Black Refractions” was on view, the Gibbes Museum of Art hosted local artists Fletcher Williams III and Kristy Bishop as part of its Visiting Artist Series, offering open studio hours, artist talks, and hands-on engagement opportunities for visitors interested in the artmaking process. While visitors could witness the artists working in media and content related to the exhibition, the artists were able to increase their professional exposure.
The Gibbes Museum of Art sought to deliver a museum experience that nurtures a greater understanding of the artmaking process, from conception to completion. The museum anticipated 1,000 visitors would interact with the resident artists.
The museum saw an increase in engagement, with 2,622 visitors observing the artists, chatting with them, or participating in the workshops and talks. The two artists reported having a good experience, with one stating, “The residency turned out to be quite successful. The exposure was phenomenal.”
Aligning artist residencies with current exhibitions and selecting artists whose practices resonate with the artworks on view can deepen visitors’ understanding and appreciation of the works. This can also be an opportunity to invite emerging artists to participate, strengthening community relationships while providing young talent with local exposure.
While visiting Mennello Museum of American Art’s exhibition “In Conversation: Will Wilson,” local elementary, middle, and high school students learned about the artist's photographic methods through hands-on activities involving cyanotypes and film cameras.
Inspired by the exhibition, "Scarlet Poppies and Ultramarine Butterflies: Language of Color," the Allentown Art Museum hosted an eight-session art program led by educator Rain Black that combined ethical foraging with creative projects like papermaking and watercolor. It culminated in a public virtual field guide, associated with local parks, to inspire community engagement with nature and art.
