Syracuse University Art Museum
Syracuse, NY
In this program, the Syracuse University Art Museum collaborated with Nyce and Homm, co-founders of the Philadelphia-based fashion and art brand Jeantrix. The program included two connected events inspired by Mickalene Thomas’s "Portrait ofQusuquzah #5", focusing on themes of identity, gender, race, and fashion. The first was a hands-on workshop involving close discussion of Thomas’s work and a customization activityin which participants painted hats, tote bags, or clothing, exploring personal identity through art and fashion. The second was a designer meet-and-greet during Community Day, offering insight into the intersection of art and entrepreneurship through the designers' creative and business journeys—a first for the museum.
The Syracuse University Art Museum aimed to more robustly engage SU students and the broader Syracuse community at the museum’s public programs.

Museums can deepen community engagement by partnering with local artists to create interactive programs that explore identity through art and fashion. Combining hands-on activities with artist talks or meet-and-greets fosters personal connections, encourages dialogue, and highlights the intersection of creativity and entrepreneurship in accessible, meaningful ways.
