Public Art from Five Perspectives
Website and 20th Anniversary Celebration

Krasl Art Center created a digital learning resource for “And You, Seas” by Richard Hunt. The sculpture is featured in “Rethinking Monuments: American Sculpture in Time, 1850-2000,” an exhibition that makes interdisciplinary connections between the artwork and literature, local history, fabrication, and physics.

About

The Public Art from Five Perspectives website was created to be an online resource for one of St. Joseph’s landmark public sculptures and to deepen understanding of the sculpture among residents and visiting tourists. With additional support from the local library and Richard Hunt’s studio, which provided contextual resources, Krasl Art Center included historical maritime images of St. Joseph’s development as a town and a video of Hunt working in the studio. The launch of the website was paired with a major public celebration of the sculpture’s 20th anniversary that saw high attendance from the local community, including Hunt, city officials, and community leaders.

Intended Outcome

Krasl Art Center wanted to build a website that looked at a local public sculpture through five thematic perspectives. With the website, it hoped to expand its capacity to meet the interdisciplinary interests of local visitors. It also hoped to engage 150 people through the website and 150 people at its paired public event.

Actual Outcome

Krasl Art Center created a website combining digital resources across five perspectives and coincided its launch with a celebratory event of its local sculpture. There were 453 page views of the website and 390 event attendees.

Advice Post Project

Connecting an exhibition’s themes to a local artwork and then creating a resource that bridges different disciplines is a great way to respond to and expand community engagement with the artwork. Krasl Art Center developed the website with the hopes that it could be an evergreen tool to help understand Hunt’s sculpture and its place in the community, and it remains available today.
