at Chrysler Museum of Art

About

A selection of plantable postcards was displayed in the gallery to engage visitors with the floral symbolism in Edward Steichen’s “In Exaltation of Flowers.” The cards were embedded with wildflower seeds, and each included an image and description of a single flower that reflected personality traits drawn from the figures in the mural. Instructions for planting the card were found on the opposite side. Visitors were encouraged to select a card featuring the flower that most resonated with them, and by planting the card at home, they could continue to reflect on the artwork and the underlying themes that inspired the artist.

Intended Outcome

The Chrysler Museum of Art hoped to make a lasting impression on visitors by providing an interpretation tool that could be taken home and brought to life outside of the museum walls. Staff planned to hand out 500 postcards.

Actual Outcome

The response was positive, with 5,600 postcards being taken from the gallery. Because the cards could be planted, they allowed visitors to continue contemplating themes in Steichen’s artwork, while watching the flowers grow in their gardens.

Advice Post Project

When implementing a take-home keepsake for visitors, be mindful of the design. Originally, these postcards were printed on different colored sheets of paper, which led visitors to believe they were embedded with different types of flower seeds, when in fact, they were all the same. Provide guests with all the information they need and consider the message that the design elements convey to prevent any confusion.
