About

Inspired by the relationship between William T. Williams' Walter’s Advice and the artist’s print portfolio of the same year (1970), DelArt paired three local organizations with three local artists, whose practices had not previously involved printmaking. Under the supervision of two master printers, each artist produced a print inspired by the mission of their respective organization and the community it serves. Additionally, the commissioned artists, master printers, print scholars, and museum staff participated in public gallery talks at partner sites.

Intended Outcome

DelArt sought to increase engagement with young adults in communities that have been historically marginalized and underrepresented in museums. DelArt hoped to reach 28,000 people through its collaboration with artists and organizations who hold these identities or have a mission that supports these groups.

Actual Outcome

DelArt reached 24,500 people through its Painters Print program, and staff members were able to develop stronger connections within the community. In partnering with Kuumba Academy Charter School, Route 9 Library, and the Latin American Community Center, artists created works inspired by their missions. The works were then placed in their community spaces, where they directly engaged with diverse audiences.

Advice Post Project

If you're commissioning prints for a museum event on a tight timeline, lean into relationships you've already built with artists and partner organizations. These trusted connections can make quick execution possible. Additionally, planning with a longer lead time will help reduce pressure and allow for even more creative flexibility in future projects.
