About

In this partnership, the Corning Museum of Glass brought its Mobile Hot Shop to the Fenimore Art Museum. The Mobile Hot Shop provided a weeklong series of events and engagements that introduced audiences of all ages to the science behind glassmaking through demonstrations of how objects in the exhibition were made and youth activities that allowed children to bring their own designs to life.

Intended Outcome

The Fenimore Art Museum set out to offer a unique and exciting multidisciplinary program that would attract new audiences and increase museum attendance. This program was estimated to reach at least 5,000 visitors.

Actual Outcome

The Mobile Hot Shop program reached 3,362 participants and was the highlight of the season. The glassmaking demonstrations, particularly those for youth titled “You Design It, We Make It” and “Don’t Try This at Home,” were an enormous success being at once entertaining, educational, and inspiring. They consistently drew large crowds.

Advice Post Project

Staff members at the Fenimore Art Museum say that in the future, they will work more closely with local daycare and eldercare facilities to coordinate trips well ahead of time to ensure that these groups are able to enjoy a program of this scale and scope.
