About

This live-drawing event featured animals from Zoo Montana, local artist Louis Habeck, and Companion Species artist Kristen Cliffel. Participants had the opportunity to interact with animals as zookeepers facilitated questions, and then Habeck taught them how to draw animals using direct observation. The event concluded with a presentation and conversation with Cliffel, who explained how she uses animals in her practice.

Intended Outcome and Projected Attendance

With this interactive experience in collaboration with the zoo, Yellowstone Art Museum hoped to reach an audience of 50-100 people and expand the local perception of the museum as a platform for unique learning and interactions.

Actual Outcome and Actual Attendance

By offering hands-on learning alongside the natural subjects of the exhibition, as well as a facilitated artmaking experience and an opportunity to meet and interact with one of the exhibiting artists, the museum leveraged an interdisciplinary angle in a single event that was well attended by families, reached 67 people, and fostered working relationships with three different collaborators.

Advice Post Project

When considering collaborators, look to individuals and organizations as well as larger institutions that can share their expertise outside of the traditional visual arts. In partnering with Zoo Montana, Yellowstone Art Museum gained access to live animals and trained handlers, who were able to help facilitate true interdisciplinary learning of art and natural science at this event. This shaped the audience’s understanding of art and artists’ processes, while also fostering an appreciation for art grounded in connections to nature and relationships between people.
