About

Rooted in the "In Memory of Memory" exhibition, UMoCA’s student symposium featured creative workshops, performance, discussion, and poetry readings focused on themes of memory. High school students from across the region were given the opportunity to think creatively, generate collective work outside the context of academia, and contribute pieces to the museum’s educational brochure.

Intended Outcome

The staff of UMoCA intended to reach 150 students by creating public programming that is relevant and connected to the needs and interests of their community, while also making new, meaningful connections with key audiences.

Actual Outcome

The Student Symposium was overall effective and well attended, with 125 participants. In post-event surveys, 77% of students strongly agreed that they enjoyed the symposium activities, and the format remains a template for similar public programming at the museum.

Advice Post Project

To minimize coordination challenges when hosting a symposium, consider narrowing the programming focus. This reduces reliance on a large number of contributors and makes it easier to adapt if unforeseen changes occur. Streamlined planning leads to more manageable logistics and a smoother experience for both staff and attendees.
