About

Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA) collaborated with local artists and the public to produce a zine inspired by and in response to “After Russell Lee: 1-60.” The zine’s contents were created with the museum’s Teen Council at programs led by poets and artists. Reflecting Levine’s connection to the Pictures generation, the zine creation process involved photocopied images as well as collage material relating to the artist's interest in appropriation, authorship, and the quest to understand how images have cultural weight, especially in a media-saturated society. The final product was made available in the gallery, as a free takeaway for the remainder of the exhibition, and on the museum's website.

Intended Outcome

Through this community-based collaborative project, MOWA wanted to provide a positive museum experience for at least 350 guests and showcase the museum as a year-round resource.

Actual Outcome

With free attendance and participation, the zine project offered 229 visitors a new way to interact with the museum. Additionally, members of the Teen Council enjoyed their poetry-writing experience so much that two students sourced their own typewriters.

Advice Post Project

Flexibility is essential in community-driven projects, especially when public participation shapes the outcome. Collaborating closely with community partners can enhance accessibility and make museum programming more welcoming and inclusive.
