About

Ten local performers were brought together to tour the “A Face Like Mine” exhibition at the Mattatuck Museum. After drawing inspiration from the artworks, they were asked to create new performance pieces that debuted during a showcase on the museum’s rooftop terrace. The event was hosted by local DJ Kevin Grant, who selected one piece to be featured on his radio station alongside another chosen by the live audience.

Intended Outcome

The Mattatuck Museum sought to expand its reach within Waterbury’s African American community by offering more diverse programming. It wanted to create an interdisciplinary program combining art, literature, poetry, music, dance, performance art, and politics. The museum expected to see at least 50 people at this event.

Actual Outcome

With 68 audience members, the showcase surpassed attendance expectations and brought in more new members than any other program associated with the exhibition. The event also allowed the museum to partner with local artists and offer an interdisciplinary experience outside of its regular programming options.

Advice Post Project

This program highlights the importance of developing partnerships with artists to build and support local communities. Museums should play a role in providing young or undiscovered talent with a platform to share their art. Leveraging connections with media outlets, including radio stations, helps extend the reach of community voices.
