The Artist in Action program was a new take on an artist residency, where artists created art in public spaces rather than isolated studios. This program was implemented in partnership with the Central Alabama Alliance Resource & Advocacy Center (CAARAC) and local painter Alisa Beck. Visitors were encouraged to engage with the artists as they worked, fostering informal conversations and deepening their understanding of the art process. The program also highlighted the intersection of art and activism, particularly through the connection with CAARAC’s AIDS Memorial Quilt project.

To engage the public with the artmaking process and encourage informal conversations between artists and visitors
The program exceeded expectations with both artists and visitors requesting more opportunities for similar engagements in the future. Community members came together to talk with one another and with the featured artists. Local artists also inquired about opportunities to partner and collaborate with the museum.
Be open to experimentation and risk-taking. For example, artist Alisa Beck painted in the galleries instead of being secluded in a studio, making the program more accessible.
