About

In celebration of the opening of "Elizabeth Catlett: A Revolutionary Artist and All That Implies," the Brooklyn Museum hosted a daylong symposium that honored the artist with performance, poetry, and dialogue. The museum brought together Catlett’s network of mentees—including Goode Bryant and Melanie Herzog, as well as art scholars Stacy Morgan and Danille K. Taylor—as panelists to offer insights into the artist herself and the works she created. The event also featured Catlett’s son, Francisco Mora Catlett, who performed alongside Afro-HORN and the Oyu Oro Afro-Cuban Experimental Dance Ensemble. Six hundred community members came together for this joyous celebration.

Intended Outcome

The Brooklyn Museum aimed to increase public knowledge of Elizabeth Catlett’s art and legacy and support fine art performance in the community by bringing 700 people together for a celebratory opening symposium.

Actual Outcome

Six hundred community members attended the museum’s free event to learn more about Elizabeth Catlett from leading scholars and to enjoy interdisciplinary performances by local artists, including Catlett’s son Francisco Mora Catlett.

Advice Post-Project

Putting together a one-day, multipart event can present logistical difficulties. To make the event a success, embrace creative problem solving. The Brooklyn Museum planned to bring together contemporaries of Catlett, leading scholars, dance companies, and musicians. With so many moving parts, the museum’s Public Programs team relied on flexibility and professionalism and remained dedicated to overcoming any logistical challenge.
