Untitled foregrounds both the stylistic and thematic features that defined Rick Bartow’s oeuvre and enabled him to transform his artistic practice into a therapeutic connection to his Wiyot ancestry. A Vietnam veteran who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, Bartow often depicted animals and humans in a state of forceful flux and transformation, melding them into a single entity. His distinctively expressive and dynamic handling of colors and lines is on full display in this 1990 pastel and graphite drawing.
