Rabbett Before Horses Strickland
Getting Nibi

About

Rabbett Before Horses Strickland creates monumental paintings featuring Anishinaabe stories. Inspired by Renaissance artists and techniques, Strickland uses a sweeping narrative structure to depict origin stories and key figures like the trickster Nanabozho. In Getting Nibi, Nanabozho kneels at the edge of the land and leans toward the water. His grandmother, Nokomis, stands by his side. Nibi means “water” in Ojibwe and is a uniting motif that frequently appears in Strickland’s work.
