The Yellowstone Art Museum (YAM) collaborated with Montana State University to write and produce a film that accompanied the display of Arshile Gorky’s “Child’s Companions.” “Waiting for Gorky’s Mother, Child’s Companion (Companion)” is a surreal and poignant short film that explores themes from Gorky’s life and art through nonlinear storytelling and evocative imagery. It premiered on June 14, 2018, during an intimate screening and panel discussion, and it has since served as an educational resource on Gorky and “Child’s Companions.”
YAM intended to reach at least 25 people with this film project, stimulating deeper engagement with the artwork and artist.
YAM hosted 26 viewers for the original film screening and received positive feedback from post-screening surveys. Viewers indicated a better understanding of Gorky and a curiosity to learn more.
Be open to creative developments that arise organically during your engagement with subject matter. “Waiting for Gorky’s Mother” was not part of the original plan but became a meaningful addition through deep interaction with Gorky's work.
