About

In partnership with The Center, an organization serving refugee communities in Utica, the Munson Museum of Art offered translated tours in 15 languages for adult ESOL students. Audio transmitters and receivers allowed for up to six groups of students to listen to the tour of the exhibition in their own language at the same time. Working with The Center, the museum also developed written translation of the exhibition intro text in six languages, providing an appropriate welcome to the space with representation of multiple vibrant communities.

Intended Outcome

The Munson Museum of Art hoped to develop meaningful relationships with new audiences and identify new program options for its community. By offering tours in 15 languages, the museum aimed to bring in 210 participants.

Actual Outcome

The Munson Museum of Art provided its pilot multilingual tour opportunity to 137 adult ESOL students.

Advice Post Project

To bring new audiences into the museum, it is important to meet them where they are comfortable. The Munson Museum staff went to ESOL classes at The Center to deliver a presentation to the students in advance of the exhibition opening. This strategy was very effective in bringing new visitors to the museum.
