About

Thinking Through the Arts was a multi-session, multidisciplinary program that connected elementary language arts and visual arts curricula with the Katonah Museum of Art through poetry, visual art, and creative movement. Led by poet Pamela Hart and dance educator Tamar Ettun, students responded to Marsden Hartley’s “Give Us This Day” using descriptive and narrative language as well as improvisational movement. The in-school program culminated in a public showcase where students shared their poetry, artwork, and choreography with family, friends, and community members. The program engaged students from local Title I schools, emphasizing access, expression, and cross-disciplinary learning.

Intended Outcome

Through this program, the Katonah Museum of Art hoped to prompt new conversations and create new multi-layered experiences for at least 400 students. It especially wanted to reach immigrants from Latin America — as student populations at local schools are over 60% Latino — and provide insight into American landscape painting.

Actual Outcome

The museum reached 400 students from Title I schools in its county.  Students felt empowered to express themselves through the written word, movement, and visual art.

Advice Post Project

Museums planning a similar program should begin by grounding interdisciplinary activities in a single exhibition or artwork that serves as a shared anchor across writing, visual art, and movement.
