About

In November 2023,Tertulia Nights featured Birds of Paradise, a performance by Pioneer Winter Collective that combined movement and spoken word to challenge traditional notions of dance and storytelling. By involving artists of varied physical abilities, body types, and gender identities, the performance was inclusive and resonated deeply with the audience. It also included an interactive dialogue, fostering community engagement and expanding the museum’s reach, especially within the LGBTQ+ and local dance communities. The program was marketed through a robust social media campaign and in local publications, ensuring wide visibility and attendance.

Intended Outcome

To ignite powerful and authentic conversations on the intersectionality of dance, body, queer identity, and personal memory

Actual Outcome

The vulnerability and compassion of the performers encouraged a safe and welcoming space for audience members to connect with art, with themselves, and with others. The crowd was deeply moved, and a majority of program evaluations demonstrated positive responses. Attendees described the performance as “thought-provoking and innovative” and a “perfect blending of emotions, movement, and poetry.” Another audience member stated: “I can feel their story without knowing them personally.” Most participants agreed the museum should offer more gallery activations and interdisciplinary programs.

Advice Post Project

Activating the gallery with related programming is highly effective in engaging visitors. If space allows, consider organizing performance-based activities in the gallery to reinforce the connection with the artwork.
