About

Art Museum of South Texas (AMST) enhanced its Home, Love, and Loss exhibition with interactive sharing boards, inviting visitors to consider key themes of the exhibition. They were able to anonymously share personal stories, drawings, and reflections, fostering deep engagement and group dialogue. To ensure accessibility, AMST provided auditory sharing options and tactile experiences for visually impaired visitors.

Intended Outcome

AMST hoped that at least 2,500 visitors would interact with the sharing boards and that these interactions would increase the average time spent in the galleries from 3 to 6 minutes.

Actual Outcome

Visitors spent an average of 11.3 minutes in the Home, Love, and Loss gallery, representing a 276% increase. Additionally, 15,251 museum visitors participated in the sharing boards.

Advice Post Project

Working directly with community partners proved to be the most effective way to increase attendance and meaningful engagement within the gallery. Museums hoping to boost attendance and engagement should build relationships with local schools, nonprofits, and cultural centers early in the planning process and highlight opportunities for visitors to contribute to the exhibition in a personal and reflective way.
