About

Newfields staff brought in a teaching artist to lead participants in a large-scale paint pour activity, inspired by Lynda Benglis’ “Goliath.” Attendees of all ages and backgrounds doused the large canvas with paint, and the activity took place alongside a lineup of other scheduled performances, artmaking stations, and events during Go Public Gardens and International Museum Day.

Intended Outcome

This hands-on activation was designed to reach local families, new community members, and younger audiences. Newfields estimated that at least 200 people would participate in this activity.

Actual Outcome

Over 300 people participated in the paint pour, and Newfields saw a 10% increase in visitors with children. A survey was given to participants following the activity, and one respondent said it was “fun for the whole family!”

Advice Post Project

Newfields staff noted that the main challenge for this activity was deciding on a location. When planning hands-on family activities, carefully consider the location to balance safety and accessibility. Outdoor spaces may pose risks to permanent installations, while indoor spaces can introduce ventilation challenges, so it’s important to prepare solutions like fans and open doors. Additionally, if the activity is tucked away in a large building, use clear signage and schedules at main entry points and along pathways to guide visitors and boost participation.
