About

In collaboration with Sisters of the Round Table, a student group dedicated to promoting the voices of women of color on campus, the Picker Art Gallery invited LA-based artist Uzumaki Cepeda to visit Colgate University and exhibit one of her faux fur rooms in the gallery near Joe Overstreet’s work, Boxes. Cepeda installed her work while the museum was open to the public, giving visitors an opportunity to see the artistic process of a young woman artist of color, engage with her directly, and consider how her work intersects with issues of social justice, cultural identity, and art activism.

Intended Outcome

The Picker Art Gallery wanted to raise public awareness of its space while welcoming the complex conversations that art can stimulate. It hoped to bring in 500 visitors through this collaboration.

Actual Outcome

While this partnership only reached 288 visitors, the overall collaboration with the artist and student group was productive in creating stimulating dialogue. Cepeda’s installation attracted a lot of attention and had the intended effect of facilitating intersectional conversations among students while also drawing out some of the important themes of Overstreet’s work and practice.

Advice Post Project

When inviting an artist to create a temporary installation, build a shared vision early in the process by connecting their practice to the themes you hope to amplify, much like the Picker Art Gallery did by pairing Boxes with Cepeda’s site-specific work and engaging Sisters of the Round Table to shape an intergenerational dialogue. Involve campus or community partners who can help ground the project in lived experiences, especially when working with artists whose identities resonate with your audiences.
