About

The Gallery Flow program at Allentown explored themes of home, belonging, and connection to the earth through Ana Mendieta’s Fundamento de Palo Monte:Silueta Series (Gunpowder Works). It integrated mindfulness and art to support participants' mental and emotional well-being. The program included five sessions: three private ones for vulnerable local groups (refugees, youth, and women reentering society) and two that were open to the public. Activities involved mindfulness exercises, story circles, somatic yoga, and artmaking.

Intended Outcome

Allentown sought to reach 300 participants by expanding its offerings to include a pilot wellness retreat that would promote empathy and provide skills for reducing stress.

Actual Outcome

Gallery Flow was successfully piloted at Allentown, engaging 190 visitors. Most reported increased connection and reduced stress in post-program surveys, which will inform the museum’s future wellness programming.

Advice Post Project

Museums can enhance community engagement by designing programs that welcome diverse audiences and foster emotional well-being through meaningful art experiences. Incorporating self-guided tours encourages deeper reflection, while using specific artworks as conversation starters can build stronger connections between visitors and the museum’s broader community.
