About

Undergraduate artists-in-residence – Bryan Fernandez, Santiago Parram, and Fahim Raham – put on unique, interactive workshops inspired by David Hammons’ Untitled. These workshops focused on body prints, unfamiliar media usage, music and art integration, and stop-motion animation. The artists simultaneously created individual site-specific installations which were on view at Spool Contemporary Art Space. The full residency was filmed and made into a documentary that lives on after the project.

Intended Outcome

To encourage undergraduate students to see the museum as a space for active, interdisciplinary engagement with original works of art

Actual Outcome

The undergraduate Artists-in-Residence program and pop-up exhibition were extremely successful in fostering student-to-student learning and in bringing people to an off-campus art space to engage with the broader community.

Advice Post Project

When creating an undergraduate artists-in-residence program, talking directly to potential applicants is far more effective than passive outreach options. It is also important to co-create the workshops that artists-in-residence organize in order to honor the inspiration artwork, the individual artist’s work, and the interests of the community.
