This small grouping features three distinct vantage points on the depiction of the human figure. Leon A. Golub’s work belongs to his “monster heads” series, which does not depict a person but a “type” afflicted by interiorized violence and stress. Golub’s figural rendering of the psychological affliction caused by the politics of his time is echoed by Moses Soyer’s late work Two Men. While not animated by the sorrow present in the other two canvases, Milton Avery’s intimate and moving study of her daughter, March, foregrounds the toddler’s depth.
