Robert Longo was part of a generation of artists renowned for reinvigorating figurative work during the 1980s. A large triptych, whose scale is meant to compete with the corporatized entertainment of the movie and advertisement industry, Untitled (Watchdog) advances an unapologetic critique of American society, as affluent couples who are dancing are confronted by photographic plates that are intended for magazine reproduction and bear images of war and starvation. An ominously sized but friendly looking German Shepherd flanks the entire array, accentuating the disorienting sense of both dread and normalcy.
