This group of four oil paintings, produced between 1855 and 1869, demonstrates the range of stylistic approaches and the subject matter diversity that characterized the production of artists associated with the loosely defined Hudson River School. Jerome Thompson’s autumnal landscape and John Rowson Smith’s view of the Hudson River feature the bucolic idyll that became increasingly popular among urban dwellers toward the mid-19th century. Joseph Morviller’s scene of an angler and his family are reminiscent of similar vistas by more widely recognized artists like Worthington Whittredge.
