George Segal’s 1970 Girl Sitting Against a Wall II belongs to a pivotal point in the artist’s career. The work is comparatively muted next to his elaborate tableaux vivant scenes that seemingly navigate the world despite being staged inside of black boxes, complete with real-life props and illuminated elements. Girl Sitting Against a Wall II coincides with a novel technique that allowed Segal to cast a positive impression with industrial plaster from the negative mold obtained from life-casting models.
