Derrick Adams
Tables Turned 1
In his Tables Turned series, Derrick Adams drew upon historical American laws that restricted Black and African American communities from publicly gathering for anything other than formal occasions. Using everyday party materials like utensils, paper plates, and colorful tablecloths, Adams created a festive resistance to this oppression. This work, the first sculpture in the series, becomes a physical space in which Black joy and leisure is celebrated and empowered.
